Aaron Fishing

A couple of months ago I finally started to rebuild my photographic equipment arsenal with the purchase of Nikon’s D40x.  Here is a photo of my son Aaron taken with that camera on the 24th while he was fishing with his grandpa.

One More Reason To Dump Windows

Here’s an article that will send chills up and down your spine if you are concerned about system security and personal privacy.  Way to go Bill, once again you have proven that my move to Linux was one of the smartest decisions I have ever made.

Microsoft | Microsoft device helps police pluck evidence from cyberscene of crime | Seattle Times Newspaper

Microsoft has developed a small plug-in device that investigators can use to quickly extract forensic data from computers that may have been used in crimes.

The COFEE, which stands for Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor, is a USB “thumb drive” that was quietly distributed to a handful of law-enforcement agencies last June. Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith described its use to the 350 law-enforcement experts attending a company conference Monday.

The device contains 150 commands that can dramatically cut the time it takes to gather digital evidence, which is becoming more important in real-world crime, as well as cybercrime. It can decrypt passwords and analyze a computer’s Internet activity, as well as data stored in the computer.

I’m Back

Well, after a very long hiatus I am back with a new look and desire to continue.  Not that I didn’t have a desire to post before, I guess that with the new baby (hmmm, aren’t all babies new?), work and juggling day to day activities that life just seemed to take precedent over the blog.

Much of my free time (read non-family duty time) has been spent in an attempt to cultivate a deeper relationship with God.  What strikes me as funny is that the more I study and learn the more I learn I have a lot to learn.  But more on that later.

One thing you will notice as the days/weeks pass is that I am going to be talking less and less about the political scene.  I’m sure that from time to time politics will be mentioned but not as heavily as before.  Why?  I’m just tired of the whole name calling/finger pointing/gloom dooming and flat out lies of the bunch of them.  This is not to say that I won’t be keeping up on what’s going on or that I’m not going to vote — far from it.  I just won’t be caught up in the firestorm of political blogging anymore.  That was not the original intent for this blog and it is not the intent now.

Now if you’ll give me leave, I think I will go get a cup of coffee.

Tony

The Lights Are On But…

FOXNews.com - Congressional Democrats Propose Cigarette Tax Hike to Pay for Children’s Health Coverage - Politics | Republican Party | Democratic Party | Political Spectrum

WASHINGTON —  Congressional Democrats have chosen an unlikely source to pay for the bulk of their proposed $35 billion increase in children’s health coverage: people with relatively little money and education.

The program expansion passed by the House and Senate last week would be financed with a 156 percent increase in the federal cigarette tax, taking it to $1 per pack from the current 39 cents. Low-income people smoke more heavily than do wealthier people in the United States, making cigarette taxes a regressive form of revenue.

Democrats, who wrote the legislation and provided most of its votes, generally portray themselves as champions of the poor. They do not dispute that the tax plan would hit poor communities disproportionately, but they say it is worth it to provide health insurance to millions of modest-income children.

All the better, they say, if higher cigarette taxes discourage smoking.

“I’m very happy that we’re paying for this,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said in an interview Friday, noting that the plan would not add to the deficit. “The health of the children is extremely important,” he said. “In the long run, maybe it’ll stop people from smoking.”

This is just brain dead thinking.  Especially his last statement.  If people stop smoking then where is the money for children’s health care going to come from?  This isn’t like a gas tax that would make people drive less thereby creating less wear and tear on the roads.  Perhaps a better target for any tax that would be used to pay for health care would be fast/junk food.  I guess that would make too much sense, which is something one rarely finds coming from the ‘progressive’ crowd.

Dr. Dobson Cleared By IRS

FOXNews.com - IRS: Focus on Family Retains Nonprofit Status Despite Dobson’s GOP Endorsements

DENVER  —  Focus on the Family chairman James Dobson has been cleared of accusations that he endangered his organization’s nonprofit status by endorsing Republican candidates in 2004, an Internal Revenue Service audit found.  The IRS said Dobson, who backed President Bush’s re-election bid, was acting as an individual and not on behalf of the conservative Christian ministry.

For once I agree with the IRS on something.
